When the world was busy celebrating Valentine's Day, the city of Yogyakarta was busy celebrating the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet Muhammad's birthday was celebrated by holding a festival Grebeg Gunungan by Yogyakarta Royal Palace. Miniature of mountain made of food that will be hotly contested by the public. That's a symbol of giving thanks to God. We called 'Gunungan'. Some people who are assigned to make gunungan, they had to fasting during the process of making it.There were two gunungan they made. Namely the male gunungan and female gunungan.
Both were paraded out of the palace toward the big mosque of Kauman. Some of Palace's knight guarded the festival. Thousands of people attended to witness the sacred ceremony.
Not only in Jogja doing this kind of festival. Royal Palace of Solo in Central Java and Palace of Cirebon in West Java, also held asimilar ceremony.
The ceremony is the culmination of the celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad. For 40 days before the Grebekan ceremony, there was a people's market festival called Sekaten.
This tradition has been going on for hundreds of years.
